Is it for me?
A round of Beinn Alligins pincer-claw ridges are a popular trip and with good reason, the rounded horns are compelling features and the route, delightfully situated above the shores of Loch Torridon, has striking, far reaching views of mighty Munros and the Western Isles. This trip takes in the round, both Munros and includes lots of easy but airy scrambling en route, all achievable in a day by even those of modest mountain experience.
We start our day just North of the Torridon Hotel, following easy trail up alongside the tumbling waterfalls of Abhainn Coire Mhic Nobuil. Shortly beyond a handy footbridge, we begin our ascent of the South-East ridge.
The going is never tough and guided by your leader, you will find optional scrambling on scattered buttresses to maintain interest during the ascent. Once upon the first Horn, the typical Torridonian sandstone terraces plunge away on either side of us as we begin our traverse. Never difficult, lots of little slabs and steep rock steps give hands on fun and encourage exploration. The most exciting route once the ridge broadens, sticks close its left edge. From here you can better appreciate the huge rift that forms Eag Dubh, a cavernous fault cutting into the mountain. The fun scrambling stays with us throughout the round, up and over each of the three horns with the view throughout among the best anywhere.
From the final peak, easy trail cuts down into Coire nan Laogh, picking a line through the buttresses below and all too quickly leading us back to our start point.
