Bespoke Winter Skills Courses

Overview

We organise private courses for any number of participants and single or multi-day access to our standard courses for those who require a shorter attendance. This can sometimes be more convenient than our full courses and allows you to top up and practise your skills under the eye of a qualified leader.

Location

The courses are based in Aviemore.

Pre-requisites

A good level of hill walking fitness is required. Determination is a must as Scottish winter days can be ardurous and demanding. We may be on the hill for up to 6 hours each day.

Is it for me?

The courses are ideal for those with summer or basic winter hill walking experience looking to expand on their skills or hillwalkers looking to refresh or update themselves.

Content

The courses are flexible and take into account the prevailing conditions and your experience, but will generally cover the following topics;

Preparation, equipment selection, basic winter movement skills, winter navigation, axe and crampons use, emergency shelters, winter expedition skills and accessing steep terrain.

All the topics take place in a practical format during a journey in the Scottish winter mountains.

Additional information

With a maximum ratio of 1:6 the courses ensure plenty of contact time with an experienced Leader. This courses generally include the ascent of a Scottish winter Munro if conditions allow. Use of helmet, ice axe and crampons are included however clients will need to provide their own winter B2/B3 boots. We can assist with renting these if required. Please see our kit list page for required equipment for the course. Some courses include the option of winter expedition, spending a night in a snow hole or bothie.
